Rarotonga International Airport (Cook Islands Māori: Rarotonga Papa Rererangi) is the Cook Islands' main international gateway, located in the town and district of Avarua, Rarotonga, 3 km (1.9 mi) west of the downtown area on the northern coast. Because of the proximity of the runways to the nearby roads, it is possible to get very close to the aircraft while they are departing and landing. Runway 08, which is at the western end of the runway, in particular is often very popular when a large jet is landing.
The airport is close to Avarua, Alofi, Papeete, Nuku`alofa, Neiafu, Pago Pago, Samamea, Lufilufi, Apia, Afega, Leulumoega, Mulifanua, Safotulafai, Vailoa, Satupa`itea, Saleaula, Safotu, Asau, Mata-Utu, Leava and other locations from French Polynesia, Pitcairn Islands, Cook Islands, Samoa, New Zealand, Tonga, American Samoa, Niue, Wallis and Futuna, United States.
